The 2022 parliamentary elections saw high levels of voter turnout and vigorous contests in the majority of constituencies. Six candidates won their seats outright in the first round. The other 34 seats were decided in the second round.
More than 330 candidates, including 73 women, stood in the original contest. First round turnout was 73%, with around 350,000 registered voters.
A record eight female MPs made it into the 2022: Zainab Abdulamir, Jaleelah Alawi, Maryam al-Sayegh, Basma Mubarak, Hanan Fardan, Maryam al-Dhain and Lulwa al-Rumaihi. Six women served in the previous Parliament.
Only seven incumbent MPs made it back in to Parliament, with significant numbers of others facing second-round defeat. Successful returnees are: Mamdouh al-Saleh, Ahmed al-Saloom, Zainab Abdul-Amir, Khalid Bu-Anq, Hesham al-Asheeri, Abdulnabi Salman and Ali al-Noaimi.
Five former MPs also made it back into Parliament: Ahmed Qaratah, Hassan Bukhamas, Jalal Kadhim, Mohammed al-Ahmed, Mohammed al-Maarifi.
Very few candidates from political societies participated in the elections, and in general these societies performed weakly: Out of four Progressive Tribune candidates, Eman Shuwaiter, Dr. Mahdi Al Showaikh and Abdulnabi Salman won seats. Mohammed al-Rifai was the only successful National Unity Assembly Candidate (NUA).
All the Salafist Asalah candidates were defeated, although a number of independent Islamists made it into Parliament, such as Mohammed al-Husseini, Mohammed Musa and Badr al-Tamimi.
